Space solar inspires hope and skepticism as it inches closer to reality
Source: cipher news / Anca Gurzu : Date: 09-09-2024
The concept of sending solar power to Earth from space has been around for decades. NASA and the U.S. Energy Department investigated it “quite extensively” during the 1970s oil crisis as a way of finding “reliable clean energy that’s from an inexhaustible source,” explained Sanjay Vijendran, who leads Solaris, the space solar program at the European Space Agency (ESA)...
ECL Launches Passive Phase Multiplication Technology For Ultra-Thin Printable Phased Array Antennas
Source: everything RF : Date: 22-10-2024
International Electric Company Limited (IECL), inventor of CASSIOPeiA, a phased array antenna with full 360-degree electronic beam steering using all elements at all angles, launched its latest technical innovation, PERSeIDA Passive Phase Multiplication, at the IEEE Arrays conference in Boston, Mass., on October 15, 2024. IECL patented the PERSeIDA technology to enable the design and manufacture of low-cost, ultra-thin, printable, phased array antennas with fine steering capability and full reciprocity. PERSeIDA lowers cost by reducing the number of active components, including expensive phase shifters, by up to 96 percent.

Space-Based Solar Power: The Future Source of Energy?
Source: Greenmatch : Date: 19-10-2020
Space-based solar panels can generate 2,000 gigawatts of power constantly. This is 40 times more energy than a solar panel would generate on Earth annually. This is also several folds higher than the most efficient solar panels today.
Space presents the final frontier for energy
Source: Verdict : Date: 09-10-2024
The ESA has been developing satellite technology to convert the Sun’s energy in space and transmit it back to the Earth. Finally, researchers in Switzerland have worked on a campaign for clean space energy. This includes a Greater Earth Lunar Power Station, which is a solar power satellite constructed primarily from lunar resources. The Lunar Power Station would be made up of Moon-manufactured solar cells that beam down power to receivers on the moon’s surface for future activities on the moon.
Startup takes new approach to space-based solar power
Source: SpaceNews / Jeff Foust : Date: 09-10-2024
A startup led by a founder of a financial services company is taking a new approach to space-based solar power intended to be more scalable and affordable. Aetherflux announced Oct. 9 plans to develop and ultimately deploy a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit that will collect solar power and beam it to Earth using infrared lasers. The company is planning to demonstrate this technology with a small satellite launching by early 2026.
Billionaire Robinhood co-founder launches Aetherflux, a space-based solar power startup
Source: TechCrunch : Date: 09-10-2024
Aetherflux wants to build a massive constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, each equipped with a solar array, a battery, and a near-optical infrared laser to transmit the power down to the ground. While the satellites will not be constantly exposed to the sun due to their altitude, and each solar array will not collect high amounts of power on its own, the startup wants to put up thousands of these spacecraft to accumulate massive amounts of energy.
