Space-based solar power is getting serious—can it solve Earth’s energy woes?
Source: Science: by Daniel Clery : Date: 19-10-2022
Late last month in Munich, engineers at the European aerospace firm Airbus showed off what might be the future of clean energy. In November, ESA will ask member states to fund an assessment of whether the technical hurdles can be overcome. If the news is good, the agency will lay out plans for a full effort in 2025. Armed with €15 billion to €20 billion, ESA could put a megawatt-scale demonstration facility in orbit by 2030 and scale up to gigawatts—the equivalent of a conventional power station—by 2040, Vijendran says. “It’s like a moonshot.”

Satellites will soon be able to deliver electricity anywhere on Earth
Source: The Press Stories : Date: 17-10-2022
The European Space Agency, ESA, wants to develop solar power in space. The electricity is then sent to Earth and is available day and night. It is within this framework that New Zealand is a company Emrod demonstrated its technology to ESA Wireless power transmission. The current prototype uses 1.92 meter antennas to transmit and receive power.....
The new age space economy

For example, the UK has identified SBSP as one potential power source to aid in the path to net-zero, and is currently providing grant support to projects for developing the necessary infrastructure. Meanwhile, the European Space Agency is also exploring SBSP as a means to help facilitate energy independence with a clean source. Researchers in China have reportedly tested technologies to enable space-based solar power, and have set a target of 2028 to begin building a plant in space. And in the US, Caltech is working on a project dedicated to space-based solar, and NASA is reportedly performing studies to evaluate the prospects of SBSP.

A company says it will one day be possible to beam power wirelessly from space-based solar panels down to Earth using electromagnetic radiation. On September 27, 2022, Emrod showcased its technology by beaming power wirelessly across 36 meters (118 feet) at an Airbus facility in Munich, Germany.
Space-Based Solar Power: Folly Or Stroke Of Genius?
Source: Maya Posch / Hackaday : Date: 14-10-2022
That’s more or less the essential thought behind space-based solar power (SBSP) as newly pitched by ESA’s director general, Josef Aschbacher on Twitter. Rather than putting photovoltatic solar panels on the Earth’s surface which has this annoying property of constantly rotating said panels away from the Sun during what is commonly referred to as ‘night’, the panels would be put stationary in space, unaffected by the Earth’s rotation and weather.
